Mulder in the Islands, Or How I Spent the 20 Million My Mommy Left Me

AUTHOR'S NOTES: This was inspired by Beduini's reunion challenge
on I Want To Believe. There were so many fine reunion scenes that
I thought we needed to take another approach. Warning, this is
not for the faint of MSR heart.

Many thanks to Jamie, Sandy and Gerry for taking a look and making
some fine suggestions and to Lynne for going somewhere warm while
I was freezing my butt off.

Mulder leaned back against the deck chair. This was heaven. He had laughed at breakfast that morning when he heard the couple next to him talking about all the snow and bitter cold they had left behind in Iowa. He should have done this years ago. Of course it was only his mother's death that had allowed this bliss.

The money was incredible. He knew the old bag was thrifty (that last apartment was a horror) but he sure didn't expect to inherit twenty million dollars. Along with the $250,000 he'd gotten from his dad for the Armani budget, he was doing well...very, very well.

He knew that the departure had been a bit dramatic, but for heaven's sake, when Krycek had approached him, he knew that he couldn't turn this one down. A one week stay with the alien forces in exchange for perfect health and a long, long life span -- nobody was losing on that deal! He hadd ffelt a little bad when he thought about Scully, but she was a strong woman, she would bounce back.

Besides, she was getting a little needy. My god, all he had done was give her a little peck on the lips, the kind you might give your grandmother. It's not like he had slipped her his tongue. But that kiss, while it didn't stop the world, had set off a very unfortunate chain of events.

Before he knew it she was coming over all the time, seriously cutting down his time on alt.tv.roswell as well as disturbing some of his other "relationships." He was just glad that the jet lag had taken him the night she fell asleep on the couch. When he woke up with her in his bed he knew that "someone" had been reading the signals all wrong.

Finally he had to get out of town. Of course Scully was an FBI agent, so a little subterfuge was necessary. Flying out of the airport in Raleigh seemed like a good way to keep her from finding about his trips to the island to monitor the work on his condo.

He might have told her eventually, but the in vitro was the last straw. It was bad enough that she was all moony, but a baby??!?! With him!?!?!? If he had wanted that he would have gotten those frosty eggs out of the freezer the first time she started getting all weepy about not having a baby. It was insanity.

Of course he really hated confrontation, so when Krycek and the alien bounty hunter offered him the deal...heck, who wouldn't jump at a chance like that?

Besides, he'd heard the snorkeling on the island was to die for. In the end, there wasn't any decision at all.
